ABOUT DREEZ

I MAKE THINGS.
I TELL STORIES.
I HELP OTHERS
DO THE SAME.

I'm Dreez Cox — a Belgian actor, writer, musician and creative coach. Different mediums, same curiosity: people, stories and what makes us become who we are.

I DIDN'T FIND
ONE STRAIGHT PATH.

My route into the arts wasn't particularly straightforward. I spent a year living in Australia trying to figure out what I wanted from life, and somewhere in that period creativity moved to the centre.

Acting clicked later, on one of my first days on a film set. I was doing background work on De Bende van Jan de Lichte and realised the only thing I really had to do was be truthful inside the situation. Someone behind the camera noticed, the moment grew slightly, and something made sense.

Since then, creating has become part of daily life — scenes, scripts, music, workshops, ideas. I don't think I ever chose one medium. I chose making things.

"You just have to be real."

PEOPLE ARE
INTERESTING.

What keeps pulling me towards acting is the chance to look deeper into people. What does someone want? What are they hiding? What scares them? Why do they behave the way they do?

That curiosity connects to my interest in psychology and self-development. Acting lets me explore those questions from the inside; writing lets me build the world around them. I love visual storytelling — behaviour, images or situations that say something without explaining everything.

WHAT IF?
Human behaviour, technology, progress, utopia and dystopia are recurring fascinations behind the stories I want to explore.

Influences include Quentin Tarantino, Chuck Lorre and M. Night Shyamalan — for very different reasons.

ANOTHER WAY
TO TELL A STORY.

Music is another part of the same creative impulse. I move between English and Dutch-language hip-hop, rap, funk and slam poetry. I write lyrics, make beats and enjoy the point where rhythm, humour and something personal meet.

GIJ ZIJT GENOEG. YOU ARE ENOUGH.
A recurring idea in my music: you don't have to become somebody else before you're allowed to feel like you're enough.

New music is currently in development, including recent studio recordings with a choir.

NEW MUSIC IS ON THE WAY.

I LIKE HELPING PEOPLE
FIND THEIR OWN WAY.

Alongside my own work, I've spent years teaching and coaching. I've given workshops in schools across Flanders, taught acting for camera, worked as a regular teacher at the Academy for Film and Television and worked with young people through organisations such as Villa Basta, Muzische Workshops and TRILL.

Creativity helped me through difficult periods when I was younger, and I know how powerful it can be when someone is given room to experiment, fail, perform, write or simply discover that their ideas have value.

Before I worked mainly in the arts, I was also a sports coach. Being born without my left hand made me interested in adapting training to my own body instead of copying everyone else's approach. That eventually became coaching other people.

The context has changed, but the instinct hasn't: I enjoy helping people discover what works for them.

I don't want to tell someone who to become. I want to help them discover what they can do.

STILL CURIOUS.

Outside of work, I'm interested in psychology, self-development, travel and human behaviour. I like putting myself in unfamiliar places, learning how other people see things and inevitably turning some part of it into a character, story, lyric or conversation.

I love structure and I'm also unusually gifted at creating chaos around it. Over time I've learned to work with both.

If my life were a film, it would probably be a dark comedy.

DIFFERENT MEDIUM.
SAME CURIOSITY.

Acting means stepping into another perspective. Writing turns an idea into a world. Music gives thoughts rhythm. Teaching gives someone else room to create.

For me, it all comes back to the same thing: understand something, make something, connect with someone.
